An eight-year-old Preston boy has died after being hit by a van.

The child, who is believed to have been in foster care at the time, was hit by a Ford Transit in Penwortham on Tuesday. A safeguarding review has since been launched.

In a carefully crafted press release, Lancashire County Council said its “sympathies go out to the family and our dedicated foster carers”.

The Council recommended that a review would be conducted “as is our standard practice whenever such a tragic incident takes place”.

Jacqui Old, executive director for education and children’s services, said: “We are deeply devastated by this truly tragic incident.”

“Our heartfelt sympathies go out to the family and our dedicated foster carers who are facing unimaginable grief and sorrow during this incredibly difficult time.”

The tragic accident happened in Penwortham on Tuesday at 4.20pm. The boy was taken to hospital where he sadly died.

Supt Gary Crowe said: “This was a heartbreaking incident and they will be in our thoughts for a very long time.

He thanked the local community for their “understanding and patience” while officers carried out a “meticulous analysis” of the scene.
